Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on four physicians, Merlin Hidalgo of Old Orchard Beach, John M. Benson of Bar Harbor, Thomas Doolittle of Waterville, and Michael G. Boutin of Medway, who were punished by other states for various reasons with revocation of their medical licenses, but were all allowed to practice in Maine. Public Citizen, the Ralph Nader organization that watchdogs American medicine, has compiled its first list of state disciplinary cases called Questionable Doctors. Public Citizen ranked Maine 22nd among the states in 2000 according to how well it protects the public. With special focus on Charlie Smith, 84, of Deer Isle, who has been calling for greater physician accountability since his wife died in 1998. Also with a related article focusing on Rebecca Martins who has been lobbying for the creation of a new state agency in Maine that would investigate medical errors.
