Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the Department of Education's push to implement Learning Results. The program ran into an unexpected snag in the Legislature: questions about whether private schools must comply. Learning Results was adopted by the Legislature in 1997 to inspire students to higher levels of achievement. But it emphasizes local control when it comes to assessment. The original statute didn't apply to private schools, but the Legislature changed that in 1999. A compromise is now underway that would require the 11 private schools that receive 60 percent or more of their funding from the state to comply, but without making them subject to local assessment.
