Abstract

"News" piece on a legislative bill that prohibits the creation of 40-acre and larger lots for house development in Maine's unorganized territory. The Legislature passed an amended version of the bill, which eliminates the 40-acre exemption, which was one of the most abused loopholes allowing unregulated development. The Senate voted unanimously in favor of the bill, while the House passed it 78-54. The exemption was originally passed in 1971 to encourage the creation of woodlots.
