Abstract

"Cover Story" piece with an in-depth look at Maine's Republican U.S. senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and their reactions to U.S. senator James Jeffords', (Independent-Vermont) historic defection from Republican ranks in the U.S. Senate, throwing the balance of power to the Democrats. Snowe and Collins, both viewed as moderates, have expressed sorrow, hurt and a little anger over Jeffords' decision. With a list of eight key Bush administration initiatives and how Senate moderates, including Snowe and Collins, affected their outcome.
