Abstract

"News" piece on legislation that has been submitted to the Senate Armed Services Committee that would allow the Navy to transfer a fragile, 400-acre saltwater heath in Corea to the Hancock County town of Gouldsboro, now that the Navy base on Schoodic Point is closing. But more questions than answers persist in the minds of area residents, compounded by the selectmen's decision to disband the town's base closure committee. Some say it's because the committee wanted the heath to go to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but one or more of the selectmen have financial ties to developer James Lowell, who owns 600 acres near the heath.
