Abstract

"Eco News" piece on how the precipitous decline of Atlantic salmon in Maine rivers since the 1970s might be due to difficulties the fish are experiencing at sea. Possible culprits like the aquaculture industry were in place in the 1970s when the now-endangered fish appeared to be making a dramatic come-back. In the 1990s, state officials repeated a water-quality study on the Narraguagus River, first conducted in the 1970s by a graduate student. Little has changed in water quality, but sea-run salmon runs in that river have declined nonetheless, suggesting they might be running into problems at sea.
