Abstract

"News" piece on free football equipment from the National Football League (NFL) that was delivered last year to such football-deprived outposts as Dexter, Carmel, Machias, Ellsworth and Presque Isle. The delivery was part of a three-year commitment by the NFL's junior player development program to "reseed" football in rural Maine. But this past spring, a year ahead of schedule, the NFL asked for the equipment to be returned and ended payment of all vendor bills. All participating coaches have complied, except for Frank Hallissey of Machias, who says the NFL is breaking faith with the kids who have their hopes set on a 10-game schedule this fall. The NFL has threatened Hallissey with legal action, but Hallissey may try to force the NFL to honor their original commitment.
