Abstract

John Fitzsimmons took over as president of the Maine Technical College System in 1990, and since then enrollment has increased by 21 percent, to 4,376 in 1993, with applications increasing 30 percent. Fitzsimmons believes that one- and two-year technical- college programs, combined with apprenticeship programs, are logical steps for the 56 percent of Maine students who are poorly prepared for the workplace.
