Abstract

"News" piece on a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to designate 16 islands in the Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge Complex as wilderness. The island complex spans 200 miles of the Downeast coast. The service also wants to phase out camping on all refuge islands by 2003. Currently, there are 40 islands in the refuge system that are home to puffins, terns, eiders and storm petrels. The draft plan would increase that number significantly.
