Abstract

"News" piece on increased road building by timer companies, which has brought easier access to once-remote ponds and a proliferation of visible boats chained to trees or locked in some other way to prevent use by others. There are 45 ponds within the 281 miles of the Maine Appalachian Trail (MAT) corridor and National Park Service regulations, which cover all 13 states the trail traverses, prohibit leaving personal property unattended over 24 hours. Volunteers from the MAT conference have posted notices on the illegal boats and all but five have since been removed.
