Abstract

"News" piece on a group of University of Maine economists, alarmed by the number of small grocery stores being put out of business by supermarkets, who are planning a four-year study of independent grocery stores. Using a $530,873 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the group will work with 10 marginally profitable grocery stores. They hope to devise strategies that will help the small stores survive in a food industry dominated by national chains.
