Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on The Sen. George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research at the University of Maine in Orono, which is back in business, according to a statement released by university administration last week. But those associated with the facility say it has suffered a severe blow to its professional reputation and to staff and faculty morale, and questions persist about the behavior of Vice President Daniel Dwyer. Some say Dwyer wanted the laboratory split from the research center because its growth and success were threatening to other research projects, and Steve Kahl, the center's director, has been fired and rehired twice, and is now on what he calls "an unpaid leave" because of petty political and professional infighting. The center, formerly known as the Water Research Institute, was dedicated on Oct. 6, 2000.
