Abstract

"News" piece on the Maine Library Association (MLA), which is opposing an anti-terrorism law passed by Congress last month giving government agents the power to secretly subpoena library records and examine library computers. MLA officials last week asked the attorney general's office for an opinion on whether the duty of librarians to protect the confidentiality of patrons' records takes precedence over the new federal powers.
