Abstract

"News" piece on the Sen. George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research, which is now under the unlikely administration of the University of Maine's College of Engineering dean Larryl Matthews. The center will answer to a five-member board made up of faculty appointed from the stakeholder colleges of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and Natural Resources. But the center has been stripped of its laboratory facility. Clyde MacDonald, a longtime Mitchell aid who serves on the center's endowment advisory board, says the new arrangement is unacceptable. MacDonald said his efforts to attract major contributors to the center's endowment fund are on hold pending an appeal of recent changes to acting Chancellor Donald McDowell.
