Abstract

"News" piece on Mark Pietras and James Whitton, both of Scarborough, who have been fined $800 apiece for dumping three pounds of Aquacide into Grondin Pond without a permit. The herbicide contains 2,4-D, which kills weeds. Some feel the fine was too low, but Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) staffer Phil Garwood explained that the men had little knowledge of the herbicide and were misled by ads for the product. Garwood also said the DEP has not gotten the message out about the need for a permit before using aquatic chemicals.
