Abstract

Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, has launched a $1 million nationwide gross-out advertising campaign designed to ween Washington County teenagers from the highly addictive prescription drug. The other places in the country targeted by the pilot campaign are Cincinnati; Phildadelphia; Charlestown; West Virginia; and three counties in southeast Florida. Kim Johnson, who heads the Maine Office of Substance Abuse, said that Pharma left her office completely out of the loop in planning the campaign, which represents only a bit of what really needs to happen. In Washington County, thousands of residents are estimated to suffer opitate addiction, which has hit members of the Passamaquoddy tribe particularly hard.
