Abstract

"News" piece on a generous prescription drug benefit that is drawing Maine veterans to the hospital and clinics of the Veterans Administration (VA) in Togus. Medicine is free for service-related problems and is available for non-service related ailments for a $2 per month co-payment, which will soon increase to $7 per month. Though the population of Maine veterans is shrinking and now stands at less than 150,000, the number seeking treatment has jumped from 22,000 to 27,000 in the last year. The hospital at Togus used to be the only VA medical facility in Maine, but in the past 15 years, clinics have opened in Caribou, Calais, Rumford, Bangor and Saco.
