Abstract

"News" piece on Amtrak service from Portland to Boston, which begins this weekend, and tens of millions of new dollars the state is investing in the system to extend service north of Portland. Toward that end, the state has already awarded the first $22 million contract to improve state-owned tracks from Brunswick to Rockland, and expects to spend $60 million overall. At question are the tracks that run through Freeport, a 15-mile section from North Yarmouth to Brunswick that is owned by Guilford Transportation. The state has yet to open negotiations with Guilford.
