Abstract

"News" piece on the Maine Memory Network, a new Maine Web site at focusing on Maine history. The network began two years ago with $250,000 in state seed money, and recently received a $375,000 grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Dan Kaplan, director of the project, said Maine has 233 local historical societies, 77 museums, 288 libraries and five archives that he believes will contribute material to the project. The free network, an "online museum" designed to archive historical documents, images, maps, photos and stories for use by the public, is unique in that groups putting material on the site have control over content and how it is presented. About 2,000 documents are currently available on the site.
