Abstract

"News" piece on the struggle to resolve the Wiscasset Route 1 bypass dispute. John Melrose, commissioner of the Department of Transportation, is now talking about a north route only, and possibly taking out the existing Davey Bridge and replacing it with another. Removal of the Davey Bridge could cost up to $3 million, and Ben Rines, first selectman of Wiscasset, opposes the idea. Melrose has scheduled a series of meetings in the next four months in hopes of getting all affected towns on board and coming to a consensus about critical issues such as passenger rail and bus service, highway access management, and two bypass options, one called the "central location" in town and the other north of the village.
