"News" piece on an Alternative Poultry Association (APA) formed by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in the interest of getting Maine's chicken-growers to network with one another. According to Michael Opitz, the extension's veterinarian, about 700 growers who breed chickens to sell eggs or meat or even to supplement their own diets would qualify for membership and are currently missing out on possible opportunities to develop an important niche market. The APA will hold its first meeting Jan. 9 in Augusta.
