Abstract

"News" piece on a showdown between workers and employers in the state that is intensifying over unemployment benefits for part-time work. A legislative bill sponsored by state represenative Zachary Matthews, D-Winslow, would require businesses to extend unemployment benefits to part-time workers, who now account for 31 percent of the labor force in Maine. Extending unemployment benefits to those who seek part-time jobs would cost between $3.6 million and $10.4 million, and the King administration and business leaders argue that business cannot afford another hike in tax rates.
