Abstract

"News" piece on the American crafts industry, which generates $12 billion to $14 billion in retail sales a year, according to Christine Macchi, a craftsperson and director of Maine Fiber Arts, a nonprofit that supports textile artists. Laurie Huttunen of HandMade in America said, 2,155 full-time crafters live and work in Maine, according to a 2001 first-ever survey of America's craft industry by the Craft Organization Directors Association. The survey also says that Maine crafters bring in $308,252,708 from sales. Maine is ranked 15th in the nation for craft sales and is especially popular with jewelers, potters, woodworkers and fiber artists, Macchi said.
