Abstract

The Maine Greens were founded in an Augusta church basement in 1984 by an original group of 17 individuals. Green party candidate Jonathan Carter in 1990 received 27,000 votes, or 9 percent of the total, in a three-way race for the 2nd Congressional District seat held by Olympia Snowe. The Greens are running Carter for governor this year, and point to the inclusion of some Green concepts in the platforms of other gubernatorial candidates as proof that Green ideas are becoming mainstream.
