Abstract

"News" piece on an ongoing study at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) focusing on silver dental fillings, or amalgam, which contain small amounts of mercury. The amalgam fillings have come under suspicion for potentially causing long-term neurological damage in young children. In partnership with Boston Children's Hospital, UMF is in the second phase of the 10-year research project begun in 1997 to follow the progress of 500 youngsters receiving standard dental care in Maine and Massachusetts. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has provided $14 million to fund the clinical trial.
