Abstract

"News" piece on the University of New Hampshire's Open Ocean Aquaculture project, an experiment intended to prove that raising fish in the open ocean can be profitable. If successful, bitter aesthetic and water-quality disputes prompted by the rise of coastal aquaculture in Maine could eventually be resolved. In 1999, fish harvest totals off the coast of Maine were 26,998,403 pounds, with 26,826,457 pounds being Atlantic salmon, according to state officials.
