Abstract

"News" piece on a new course in the city of Portland's waterfront planning project. Portland mayor Karen Geraghty has disbanded the 35-member "master planning" committee that had engineered an agreement on redeveloping the former Bath Iron Works site into a tourist-oriented cruise ship terminal. Geraghty now plans to appoint one or two smaller committees to focus on the construction of a $1 million freezer with public funds to facilitate the shift in commercial fishing toward less valuable species, and the construction of an aquarium, which opponents fear could squeeze out fishing and cargo-handling issues.
