Abstract

"News" piece on Maine Energy Recovery Co. (MERC) in Biddeford. Saco has joined Biddeford in filing a lawsuit ostensibly claiming they are owed an estimated $40 million under the 1999 merger of KTI with MERC owner Casella Waste Systems of Vermont. But many believe the cities would be happiest if they could just succeed in cleaning MERC up or shutting it down. Mark Robinson, spokesman for the watchdog group Twin Cities Renaissance, said the lawsuit will convince the state it needs to revisit solid waste policies and begin to plan for a non-incineration future. Maine's Department of Environmental Protection hopes to develop a plan for a statewide solid waste disposal program.
