Abstract

The University of Southern Maine, concerned that the traditional four-year curriculum and 15 weeks of student teaching was not adequately preparing students to become teachers, abolished its undergraduate education major entirely. In its place is the Extended Teacher Education Program, which takes individuals with a four-year degree in the liberal arts and gives them a fifth year combining intensive course work with a complete academic year of apprenticeship.
