Abstract

"News" piece on the Medical Mutual Insurance Co., (MMI) which was created by Maine physicians during the malpractice crisis of the 1970s. Seventy percent, or about 2,000 of Maine's physicians belong to MMI, which is owned by its policyholders. St. Paul Cos., of Minnesota, once the leading writer of physician liability insurance in Maine, said last year it would not renew old policies or write new ones after losing $1 billion in malpractice claims the previous year. But Fred Holler, president of MMI, said his company is sound and rates are only jumping about 8 percent annually.
