Abstract
"Nature Watch" piece on whitetail deer and the correlation that exists between deer densities and the disappearance of certain songbirds. Woods-wise hunters say you shouldn't hunt deer anywhere the population is less than 50 per square mile. In the lower third of Maine, the herd might average 18 per square mile, but in coastal southern Maine, some areas are approaching that magic 50 number.
