Abstract

"News" piece on Maine's sea urchin industry. A researcher at the University of Maine has identified two varieties of the species, only one of which reaches harvestable size. The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) says the findings, if borne out by further study, could lead to significant changes in the important fishery. New measures might include developing protected coastal nursery zones, where new generations of urchins can develop unmolested before being released into the sea. DMR records show a record yield in 1993 of 41 million pounds, worth $26 million. In 2000, only 12 million pounds were harvested, with a value of about $17 million.
