Abstract

"News" piece on "commercial logo" billboards along Maine's highways. At least 168 have sprung up at exits along the rural stretches of Interstate 95 in the state, and variable message signs are cycling their messages every 20 minutes instead of every four hours. Both of these changes came as a result of recent legislative action that allows businesses within three miles of an exit in a rural area to put their logo on an exit sign as long as at least three businesses participate. Previously, Maine was one of just four states that prohibited off-premises advertising.
