Abstract

"News" piece on a legislative bill sponsored by state represenative Paul Tessier, D-Fairfield, that will create and fund a Fatherhood Issues Study Commission. Tessier's bill, approved by the Legislature, creates a nine-member panel with a $3,700 budget to examine issues relative to fatherhood in Maine. While many programs provide support to mothers, few have extended the same concern to fathers. One exception was the Young Father's program in Rockland, where director Herb O'Connor provided outreach, education, friendly support and mentoring to dads struggling to maintain a connection to their young children. O'Connor's program folded last fall for lack of funding.
