Abstract

"News" piece on a new "rulemaking" petition concerning the regulation of coastal fish farming filed with the Maine Department of Marine Resources by the Conservation Law Foundation and the East Penobscot Bay Environmental Alliance. Supporters of the law say the 39-page rewrite of leasing procedures would do what the Legislature has failed to do: protect sensitive coastal areas supporting tourism and traditional fishing operations from the impact of aquaculture. The filing is the latest salvo in a wide-ranging fight that stands to affect economics, aesthetics, the environment and the fabric of Maine's working waterfront. With details about what the proposed rules would require of coastal fish farmers.
