Abstract

Feature article on the Compact for Maine's Forests, and the groups and individuals supporting and opposing the compact. Jonathan Carter, the leader of last year's Ban clear-cutting campaign, is joining with landowners and property rights activists to argue that the compact should be rejected. Carter says the compact will allow up to 180,000 to be clearcut in the unorganized territories, an increase over recent years. Outline of the compact, which Maine voters will consider next month.
