Abstract

Related articles and editorials on sprawl. Evan Richert of the State Planning Office, the guru of sprawl, has discussed the issue at recent events in Portland and Bar Harbor. Maine Department of Education policies on building new schools discourage the renovation of existing schools, and favor sites outside of traditional village centers. Gov. King has presented a vision for reducing sprawl in Augusta that includes consolidating state offices and linking the State House complex with the Augusta Mental Health Institute by an aerial tramway. The permitting process for widening the Maine Turnpike might be an early test of new federal rules on emission controls, which are in turn linked to a congressional battle over the federal Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act.
