Abstract

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has ordered that the 917-foot-long timber-and-rock Edwards Dam in Augusta be demolished at the expense of its owner, Miller Hydro. The decision marks the first time in history that FERC has denied an application to relicense a dam and the first time the commission has ordered the removal of a dam. The FERC staff initially supported relicensing, but the Kennebec Coalition's critique of FERC's review convinced the staff that the removal of the dam was in the public's best interest. Former Maine Attorney General Jon Lund, now publisher of the monthly Maine Sportsman, in 1974 imagined what it would be like if the Kennebec River could run wild to the sea. Details.
