Abstract

Patrick Carkin, 28, of Richmond, last week distributed 140 copies of Dorothy Allison's "Bastard Out of Carolina" at high schools in Augusta, Bath, Lewiston and Portland. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court recently granted the Kingfield area school board the right to dictate how the book is taught. The book was at the center of debate after parents objected to passages when teacher Molly Sinclair introduced it at Mt. Abram High School. Tabitha King of Bangor donated $500 to Carkin's effort to distribute the book.
