Abstract

Researchers at the University of Maine at Orono analyzed sediment from two ponds on Mt. Desert Island, and determined rates of mercury and lead deposition declined in Maine in the 1970s and 1980s. Steve Kahl of UMO's Water Research Institute said the study does not mean freshwater fish are again safe to eat. The Bangor Daily News attributed the reductions to the Clean Air Act, but Kahl said the findings are more complicated. Details.
