Abstract

Gov. Angus King was elected in 1994 with just 37 percent of the vote, the lowest winning total in Maine history. King has become one of the most popular governors in memory, and the Republicans and Democrats have yet to put forward any candidate for the 1998 election who would seem to have the remotest chance of winning. King's critics say the problem isn't that he has been a great governor, but that his combination of popularity, name recognition and money is nearly unbeatable. Discussion of potential candidates.
