Abstract

As many as 28 Maine post offices are on a list for possible closure or consolidation, part of the U.S. Postal Service's nationwide attempt to cut costs and compete with alternative carriers. Many small-town residents who rely on the post office as a community center argue that the USPS has an obligation to continue serving both large and small communities. Residents in Sargentville and East Vassalborough have organized in an attempt to save their respective post offices, but the final measure in determining whether a facility will remain open is based on a rigorous set of USPS guidelines.
