Abstract

Burt's Bees Inc. of Guilford recently relocated to North Carolina, taking with it a $3.5 million honey and beeswax products business and leaving behind 50 unemployed former workers. Part of the reason the company left was the response it received when it sent letters to five states, Maine included, and inquired about the business climate. Van Baalen Pacific Inc. in Rockland, a subsidiary of Nautica Enterprises Inc. of New York, is now considering a move south, leading some to wonder how far the state should go in competing against other states to retain growing companies.
