Abstract

Unity College, founded in 1965 and currently enrolling 450, in 1990 carried a $1.2 million deficit on an annual operating budget of $5 million. Wilson Hess was hired as president of the college that year, and since then he has recorded an annual operating surplus of close to $100,000 and increased the endowment from $40,000 to $400,000. College trustee Bert Clifford last fall tried to have Hess ousted, and when that failed said he would pay off the college's debts and help establish an endowment if Hess were fired and all the trustees resigned. The trustees refused, leading to Clifford's own resignation. Details.
