Abstract

Voters in the Piscataquis County town of Atkinson last week passed an ordinance limiting clearcuts to one-quarter acre and setting minimums for the number of trees a landowner is required to leave on remaining acreage. The ordinance, one of the strictest in the state and a possible model for other towns, has been in the works for two years, after heavy harvesting on several parcels bought by developers and land speculators.
