Abstract

On August 14, 1989, 21-year-old Byron Raynes broke into John Shaw's Gardiner home, handcuffed Shaw and went on to murder his wife Peg. Shaw received some harsh criticism for failing to condemn Raynes, who was sentenced to 75 years in the Maine State Prison. Shaw, a mental health professional and director of the Kennebec Valley Mental Health Center in Waterville, instead focused on trying to understand the social forces that caused Raynes to act as he did.
