Abstract

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joseph Brennan during the primary proposed extending the Appalachian Trail to Canada. Though the exact details of the plan remain to be worked out, the general idea would be to try to link a series of trails and Baxter State Park in Maine, Mount Carleton in New Brunswick and the Parc de la Gaspesie in Quebec. The most enthusiastic reponse to the idea to date has come from Canadian officials; initial resistance has come from landowners and, surprisingly, the Appalachian Trail Conference. Details.
