Abstract

Another in a series of reports on the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment's three-day conference in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The council's mission is one of ecological stewardship, and its activities include monitoring and researching pollution, protecting wildlife habitat and public health and educating people about the gulf in order to foster a sense of identity. The fisheries crisis in the Gulf of Maine is now presenting the council with repercussions beyond the ecological issues, as coastal communities dependent on the gulf's natural resources face economic, social and cultural impacts as a result of the closure of the fisheries.
