Abstract

The Maine State Ferry's Rockland-to-Vinalhaven run has suffered 11 accidents in five years, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office in Portland and the Maine Department of Transportation to ask the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for help. The NOAA beginning September 1 will conduct soundings, measure tides and use other tests to determine what is causing the accidents in The Reach and Lairey's Narrows off Vinalhaven. Details.
