Abstract

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has announced that its plans to protect the least tern and piping plover will be reduced by removing some areas from protection, and will allow more use of the beach areas where the birds nest. Maine had a peak population of around 250 piping plovers and from 1,000 to 1,200 least terns, but the numbers have declined to roughly 80 pairs of terns and 35 pairs of plovers.
